Is this like so many of us believed when it was first announced a blatant grab for cash without any substantive changes to the rules, or is this a new better iteration of an old favorite? I have not read the others edition. I started with MgT 2E, and I find the rules to work well together and to be well explained.

I have not Gm'ed spaceship combat yet, but I have used High Guard starship creation, and it works. The character creation chapter is a little wierd to sort through, but on a PDF, it works. Not sure on how the book will handle though. The psion career. The only thing that really threw me off in the spaceship department was the floorplans not being top-down, but isometric, really meh design choice. Looks cool, not usable as a combat map, therefore meh. I'll start with some of my favorite ideas from Traveller. Although I generally dislike the Mega Traveller rules, the Hard Times setting was I thought the best of all possible worlds for a Traveller campaign. However I always prefer to run the setting with the original little black book ruleset. I am not completely sold on investing significantly in 2nd edition as of yet.
Mongoose is products over the last few years have become increasingly uneven and are generally very poorly edited. I would love to hear people sell me on 2nd edition Mongoose Traveller. I did get electronic downloads of Mongoose 1e, and one could probably adapt that.
I don't think I would bust a gut to go to Mongoose, but it might be more accessible to younger players as it is at least actively supported by the publisher. I really like 1e, and have a lot of 1e books already. however, 2e manages to be a higher production value color art with simplified skills, yet somehow manages to have a messier layout than 1e.
the 2e ships add a new concept of power, which 1e was able to ignore easily enough by dimming the lights for a jump. the addition of beam weapons to the powergrid is a complication that means armed ships need larger engines by default, a strange approach to the problem. and yet mongoose traveller 2nd edition pdf download could paradoxically end up with smaller engines just by going higher tech than the default TL the best advantage of 2e, is that the university and military academy are in the main book, instead of a distant supplement that few players will ever see.
these are core approaches to character creation that somehow were missing from 1e core. offhand, i would use 1e to run a game as i already have the books, but be happy to play in either edition. As somebody that has had very little knowledge of Traveller over the years; I loved getting into Mongoose 2E. I don't like how some rules are scattered between chapters High Guard earns a sin for not putting Sensor Stations on one page! Part of what made the previous editions to be avoided for me was how deep the canon was, when realistically the point of a generic Sci Fi system is to make your own canon.

While High Guards Ship Construction is serviceable, it suffers from "60's-itus" as the level of technology shifts dramatically, since you can theoretically make any type or tech of ship, this ends up with goofy things like having your engines be broken up into hundreds of tiny generators instead of a handful of engine systems.
Similarly, the fact that they spread options all over the High Guard book again makes it very hard to sit down and just make a ship without having to reference every other book and chapter. Also, doesin't seem like all of the pre-built ships besides Dread's are severely under-gunned? I have run a 1e game sincein that time I have bought hundreds of dollars of mongoose stuff, until 2e, then I stopped. Price is another thing, 2e is too expensive. It appears combat is also nerfed to make it less deadly, which is like a lot of little changes that move it away from the regular Traveller feel, feels cheaper, less sci-fi. It is put out to have something to sell, if that is the definition of "money grab" so be it. It isn't a better rules set than 1e, which is a shame. I still play T4 albeit with a lot of house rules, incorporating some CT. I was curious about Mongoose so I picked up the 2nd edition book and wasn't impressed.
